Beads
Glass beads have been used by Native Americans since they were first distributed along trade routes 200-300 years ago. Explorers, traders, clerics and rogues quickly realised their high value amongst Native people. In itself though, bead-working is regarded as a true Indian tradition because it was a skill developed from using materials accessible to the Natives, such as shell, stone, wood and even roots, teeth and porcupine quills. Traditionally, Native Americans have used beads to add beauty and meaning to items for personal use such as clothing, religious items and household articles.
Interesting fact - pony beads are so-called because the bead, made in Venice Italy, was brought in overland by pony pack trains.
